Why You Should Attend

Envisioning the University's Role in the 21st Century Economy

Universities are anchor institutions because, once established, they cannot easily move. Adopting an anchor mission, however, implies more than merely being an anchor institution. Rather, it requires consciously and strategically aligning economic, human and intellectual resources to better the surrounding community. Simply put, today it is not enough for a university to graduate students or publish research papers. Fortu, a universityóworking with city, philanthropic, public school, public health and community partnersócan do much more, including help promote local employment, facilitate problem-solving and build community wealth. This course will investigate the challenges and potential of this community-building work.

    Practical Insights From

    Steve Dubb
consultant and Senior Fellow at The Democracy Collaborative
Steve has nearly 20 years experience as a coach and researcher on the role universities play in community economic development. Over the past 15 years, Steve has written extensively on this topic, publishing many works while at The Democracy Collaborative. His first book, Linking Colleges to Communities, examined the history of universities and community engagement from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twenty-first century. His work has introduced a framework for hospitals and universities to assess and improve their impact in low- and moderate-income communities. This work became the basis for the Anchor Dashboard Learning Cohort. Launched in 2014, Steve helped develop this project into a partnership involving six universities who are co-creating measures to track and assess their impact in ways that are respectful to community partners.
